Most of the time, in my day,
no matter how short something was,
[04:25] Taka
it'd still have a 26-episode
run at the very least.
[04:28] Taka
But after meeting Mimori-san,
[04:30] Taka
I got this perfect image
[04:30] Mimori
Right.
[04:31] Taka
of what I wanted my take on Ekoda-chan to be.
[04:34] Mimori
Right.
[04:35] Taka
To put it another way, normally,
I have to ask a production committee
[04:39] Taka
if I can do things
a certain way, but this time...
[04:42] Taka
they were the ones who wanted
me to do things a certain way.
[04:49] Taka
And that felt good.
[04:51] Mimori
Thank you.
[04:53] Mimori
Well, there was a lot of monologuing...
[04:57] Mimori
This takes place after
Ekoda-chan gets home,
[05:00] Mimori
and I figured it had to give the impression
of someone who's in their own little world.
[05:06] Mimori
The idea is that, it just sorta flows,
in a stream of consciousness kinda way.
[05:11] Mimori
But even then, there are parts
like when the oil splashes her...
[05:15] Mimori
I was really hoping I could
pull off a natural-sounding take
[05:20] Mimori
to complement the sort of "day
in the life" scene that was depicted.
[05:26] Taka
Well, to me, Ekoda-chan is kind of
a symbol of the sort of common...
SIGN What kind of character did you want to portray
with your version of Ekoda-chan?
[05:34] Taka
I guess you'd call them "desires"?
Or maybe "laziness" is more apt?
[05:38] Taka
But, underneath it all, she's
got that spark of earnestness.
[05:43] Taka
It's actually pretty hard
to get through life
[05:46] Taka
without that little bit
of conviction, you know?
[05:49] Taka
It was all of those things combined that
I felt when I was reading the original manga,
[05:57] Taka
and I really took a shine to that little bit
of earnestness she has deep down inside her.
[06:06] Mimori
Well, I came to the original
via the collected volumes,
SIGN Project/Production

[06:10] Mimori
and I remember thinking,
"This character seems really plausible."
[06:15] Mimori
I think, a lot of the time,
men tend to imagine that women...
[06:20] Mimori
When they try to picture what their
personal lives are like at home,
[06:24] Mimori
I think a lot of men have this vision of us
all having really glamorous home lives,
[06:31] Mimori
but I think, in reality, and
especially considering she's 24,
[06:38] Mimori
the picture it paints
of bachelorette life
[06:41] Mimori
makes me go, "Yeah, that sounds about right."
[06:46] Mimori
And that made it really easy
for me to relate to, personally.

[07:05] Mimori
The impression I got fairly early on
when I was reading through,
[07:10] Mimori
was that she just felt like
someone who could exist in real life.
[07:15] Mimori
In particular, when she's
taking off all her clothes,
[07:18] Mimori
then just lays back and
starts opening and closing her legs...
[07:22] Mimori
I thought that was really funny,
and I actually laughed out loud.
[07:26] Kataoka
I thought that part was amazing
when I saw the storyboards.
[07:29] Mimori
I did, too.
[07:30] Kataoka
How did you...
[07:31] Taka
Well, the thing about the
part where she's stripping off...

[07:36] Taka

[07:39] Taka

whenever I get in the bath...
[07:42] Taka
See, I wear boxers.
[07:44] Taka
I let them drop, then kick them up,
and toss them in the laundry.
[07:48] Taka
And I thought, since that's a bigger motion,
[07:49] Mimori
Wow.
[07:50] Taka
it'd be more of a visual treat for the viewer.
[07:55] Taka
But one of the women doing the animation
[07:57] Mimori
Yeah?
[07:58] Taka
turned around and said:
"No one would ever do this."
[08:00] Taka
"No matter how unladylike she is,
no woman would do this."
[08:02] Taka
"This is how women take their clothes off."
[08:05] Taka
And I was like, "Okay, I just thought
it'd be more interesting my way."
[08:09] Taka
But you know,
[08:11] Taka
being able to show the
way women act in private,
[08:15] Taka
which is something I'm not familiar with?
[08:18] Taka
That's what we were able to do with this.
[08:20] Taka
So, as a creator, even if I thought
the other way was visually appealing,
[08:27] Taka
if I hear the words, "No woman would
ever do this," I have to go, "Oh, right."
[08:31] Taka
And whenever you have
a collaborative process,
[08:34] Taka
that kind of back-and-forth is a lot of fun.
[08:35] Mimori
You're totally right.
[08:38] Mimori
I got the impression that she was really cute.
[08:41] Mimori
Like, how she used those shopping
bags as an impromptu apron.
[08:45] Mimori
That was really clever.
[08:47] Mimori
I was impressed with Ekoda-chan.
[08:49] Taka
I mean, she's always naked.
SIGN The combination of nudity and paper bags as an apron
SIGN Takahashi
Ryosuke
[08:53] Taka
But I wanted to accentuate that fact.
[08:55] Taka
And I wanted to use something
that was a harsh contrast to nakedness.
[09:00] Taka
So that's why we went with that.
[09:02] Taka
It was the first idea
[09:04] Taka
that popped into my head, to be honest.
[09:05] Mimori
Wow.
[09:07] Taka
I was kinda worried about
what I'd do if it got rejected,
[09:10] Taka
but since it wasn't...
[09:12] Mimori
It was a really creative idea.
[09:15] Kataoka
It's exactly the kind of thing she'd do.
[09:16] Mimori
Yeah, isn't it just?
[09:18] Mimori
I mean, being naked like that...
[09:20] Mimori
There are a lot of people who do actually
like to walk around in the nude at home.
[09:25] Mimori
So that would probably work for them.
[09:25] Taka
Well, I figured she'd have come up with some way
[09:28] Taka
to deal with oil splashing.
[09:29] Taka
And if she just stuck on an apron,
[09:30] Mimori
It's practical.
[09:32] Taka
that'd be too ordinary.
[09:34] Taka
Plus, wearing just an apron
[09:36] Mimori
Yeah, you've got a point.
[09:36] Taka
is a little too sexy, right?
[09:38] Taka
And I didn't want it to turn into
[09:40] Taka
some kind of random erotic scene.
[09:42] Mimori
Right.
[09:43] Taka
So we went a different way.
[09:44] Mimori
And that led to the paper bag.
[09:45] Taka
Right.
[09:47] Mimori
At first, as I was reading, I thought about
giving the monologue more of a pop feel,
SIGN Issues during the voice-over
[09:54] Mimori
but when I heard they were
putting enka music underneath...
[09:56] Mimori
That gave me the impression that Ekoda-chan
was totally absorbed in the moment.
[10:00] Mimori
Like she was treating it as a documentary
of her own life, produced by her.
[10:04] Mimori
So I tried to lean towards making it
more interesting in that way, instead.
[10:10] Taka
Well, with Nakajima Miyuki-san's music...
SIGN The melody of the ending song
[10:11] Taka
Right.
[10:12] Taka

[10:15] Taka
but it's sorta... more rousing, you know?
[10:17] Mimori
Right, right.
[10:18] Taka
That's what she's known for.
[10:19] Taka
That's the feeling I get from it.
[10:22] Kataoka
That's an easy-to-understand explanation.
[10:22] Taka
Like... it's not profound or anything,
[10:26] Taka
but it still cheers you up, right?
[10:28] Mimori
Right, right.
[10:28] Mimori
And, well...
[10:29] Mimori
From there, we just had to pick
the right spot for it to start playing.
[10:34] Mimori
That was the plan I had in my head.
[10:37] Taka
The thing is, the contents of these volumes...
SIGN The plot for Episode 6 of "Rinshi!! Ekoda-chan"
[10:40] Taka
Three minutes is nowhere near enough
[10:44] Taka
to even cover what's in one volume.
[10:44] Kataoka
Right.
[10:46] Mimori
Not in three minutes.
[10:47] Mimori
If I wanted to tell a whole
story adapted from the strips,
[10:53] Mimori
three minutes just wouldn't be long enough.
[10:58] Mimori
And I thought about trying to include
material lifted directly from the manga,
[11:06] Mimori
but ultimately decided I was better off
not using any particular moments from it.
[11:12] Mimori
Other than the fact she's always naked,
[11:15] Mimori
and just... I wanted to take her nudity,
[11:20] Mimori
and depict the way she moves
as naturally as possible.
[11:23] Mimori
I wanted to show that side of her,
without making it too jokey.
[11:27] Mimori
And if I'm honest about why I did that...
[11:29] Mimori
The other 12... well, 11 directors?
[11:33] Mimori
They're all really good.
Every single one of them.
[11:37] Mimori

[11:41] Mimori
On top of being good at

[11:47] Mimori
I mean, on a technical level, my own projects...
[11:51] Mimori
They're never that fancy, right?
[11:54] Mimori
So when I was considering
how to approach this,
[11:59] Mimori
I figured that nobody else would
do this with the character,
[12:03] Mimori
and... well...

[13:27] Kataoka
Something about a woman
trying to make it on her own...
SIGN In specific terms,
what kind of directions did you give Mimori-san?
[13:31] Kataoka
When it comes to old guys...
I wouldn't say they like them in particular,
[13:36] Kataoka
but they sort of view them with
fewer prejudices. That's what I think.
[13:41] Kataoka
So when they come home beat after work...
[13:46] Kataoka
It's usually after work, anyway.
[13:48] Kataoka
At times like that, you kinda
get lost in your own world,
[13:52] Kataoka
and there's that moment where you
think: "What am I gonna do to relax?"
[13:56] Kataoka
So out comes the beer, or the malt liquor.
[13:58] Kataoka
And I bet they come to the realization that,
[14:00] Kataoka
"All those old dudes out there, busting
their humps, are doing the same, huh?"
[14:04] Kataoka
And even though they say, mockingly,
"They're doing the same damned thing!"
[14:10] Kataoka
somewhere underneath that derisive tone,
[14:14] Kataoka
there's a sort of... affection.
A sense of camaraderie. Right?
[14:18] Kataoka
Shared by people who go out into the world,
work at their job, then come home again.
[14:22] Kataoka
And that's their daily routine.
[14:24] Kataoka
That was something I asked the audio
director to help me get across.
[14:32] Kataoka
It keeps coming back
to this perception I have
[14:34] Kataoka
of there being no real difference
between Ekoda-chan and myself.
[14:39] Kataoka
And I wanted that to come across,
both in the visuals and the audio.
[14:46] Kataoka
And if we manage that, it'll be great.
[14:51] Mimori
At the beginning of the episode, the weird
things she says about her neighborhood...
SIGN Things the sound director helped her figure out
[14:57] Mimori
And what she says isn't really
meant in a negative way,
[15:01] Mimori
so I was asked to make the lines
sound somewhat affectionate.
[15:06] Mimori
And that made me realize,
Ekoda-chan is kind of...
[15:10] Mimori
She's not exactly cynical, but she's very...
down-to-earth, especially in how
[15:17] Mimori
she analyzes her current situation
and tries to find a path to happiness.
[15:23] Mimori
And I thought that made Ekoda-chan
really appealing and likable as a person.
[15:31] Mimori
Instead of just being, like, "I'm not fond of
this neighborhood, but I have to live here."
[15:35] Mimori
Ekoda-chan kinda views Ekoda
as this weird halfway house.
[15:39] Mimori
Where she's not near the center of the city,
but she's not out in the country, either.
[15:43] Mimori
But somehow, she's comfortable there.
[15:46] Mimori

element of the episode.

[17:14] Mimori

[17:16] Taka
Even though Ekoda-chan only has eyes for him,
[17:19] Taka
and all the while, she's thinking: "This little..."
[17:22] Taka
She still can't bring herself to hate him.
[17:27] Taka
When you look at that part
in isolation, it's kind of sad.
[17:33] Taka
But Ekoda-chan... As much as
he irritates her, she still cares for him.
[17:40] Taka
And it's more than just that
relationship... I think Ekoda-chan...
[17:45] Taka
She doesn't like to...
give up on things, you know?
[17:50] Taka
She, well... She doesn't give up on life.
[17:53] Taka
Through all her trials and
tribulations, she doesn't give up.
[17:56] Taka
She has all these bad experiences, yet on
the whole, she still likes the world as it is.
[18:02] Taka
I think that's something
we both have in common.
[18:08] Taka
I think the world's a good place...
Or at the very least, I enjoy everyday life.
[18:14] Mimori
I feel the same way.
It's sort of like what you said...
[18:18] Mimori
Ekoda-chan seems to love her day-to-day,
or at least, she's optimistic about it,
[18:24] Mimori
and no matter what kind of unfair
treatment she's subjected to,
[18:27] Mimori
or how much she gets irritated at
all the dolled-up girls around her,
[18:33] Mimori
she just knows, deep down,
that she can't be like them.
[18:38] Mimori
And something about that...
[18:42] Mimori
It's the way she doesn't
ever let it get her down,
[18:48] Mimori
and how she just tries to enjoy life...
[18:52] Mimori
She's doing what she can to get as much
enjoyment out of life as possible,
[18:56] Mimori
and that's something I think
we have in common.
[19:00] Mimori
When something really gets me down,
[19:06] Mimori
instead of going, "Aw, no..."
I prefer to go, "Oh, well!"
[19:11] Mimori
and try to just shift
gears on my mental state.
[19:14] Mimori
That's something I think we might both do.
SIGN Boil down Ekoda-chan's appeal into a few words
[19:19] Taka
You could call it... run-of-the-mill optimism.
[19:23] Taka
I mean, everybody has their own dreams,
[19:26] Taka
but whether or not you achieve them
is a personal thing, and hard to judge.
[19:31] Taka
But when you have something
you're shooting for,
[19:34] Taka
it's easier to look forward to it.
[19:36] Taka
That's how I've lived up to now, personally,
and it's still a big part of my life.
[19:43] Taka
Though, there's a big difference
between 24 and 76,
[19:46] Taka
but I don't think age is really a factor.
[19:50] Mimori
She just seems like a girl with charm to me.
[19:53] Mimori
A charming girl. That's Ekoda-chan.
[19:54] Taka
Right.
[19:56] Mimori
I mean, as she goes through life,
Ekoda-chan does have moments
[19:59] Mimori
where she feels bitter
or gets jealous of others.
[20:02] Mimori
It's not all positive, by any means, but...
[20:07] Mimori
You can't hold it against her,
[20:09] Mimori
and I think that's because something about
Ekoda-chan... won't let you judge her that way.
[20:17] Mimori
And you'd think you'd find
people like that everywhere,
[20:19] Mimori
but they're actually pretty rare.
[20:22] Mimori
It sorta makes me want
to be that kind of woman.
[20:28] Taka
Well, making animation like this...
SIGN Thoughts on today
[20:35] Taka
I think I'll be doing it for a while yet.
[20:40] Taka
And before I came in today...
for the recording, I mean...
[20:47] Taka
Thinking about how the project was
gonna come together in the end...
[20:52] Taka
Having a hand in every aspect of it...
That was something I really enjoyed.
[20:55] Taka
Working in animation, where you
have the vocals, along with the music,
[21:00] Taka
and the sound effects,
and the way it all comes together...
[21:04] Taka
It made me remember what it was
I enjoyed when I first got into this business.
[21:08] Taka
That's what I took away from it.
[21:10] Mimori
At first, since I was by myself,
I was kind of worried.
[21:14] Mimori
I mean, coming in and just...
being the only one in the booth
[21:19] Mimori
was a new experience for me,
so I was pretty nervous,
[21:24] Mimori
but once I'd met the director,
and seen how kind he was...
[21:29] Mimori
That really helped me to relax,
and being able to, um...
[21:33] Mimori
talk about things like this,
in this round-table discussion,
[21:38] Mimori
and hearing about how
he used to work in an office,
[21:43] Mimori
it made me think about how
I ended up as a voice actress.
[21:49] Mimori
I could sort of see parallels there.
[21:52] Mimori
I started out in theater, and really
had no idea about anime at first,
[21:58] Mimori
but I started getting into it
when I became a voice actress.
[22:00] Mimori
And meeting someone else like
that by chance was really... yeah.
[22:05] Mimori
It was really nice to make a new connection.
[22:08] Taka
Yeah.
[22:10] Narrator
That's it for today's discussion.
