"The Mermaid Who Washed Ashore and Died."

So that level of excitement was... Yeah.
[04:43] Yoyo
It was fast-paced for you, right?
[04:44] Rumi
Yes, it was.
[04:45] Yoyo
The kind of breakneck speed
that leaves you breathless.
[04:49] Rumi
It was only three minutes' worth of material,
[04:52] Rumi
but it felt like I was talking
non-stop for ten minutes.
[04:54] Yoyo
I'm pretty sure you did talk for that long.
[04:57] Rumi
That's how it felt.
[04:59] Rumi
Other than that,
[05:00] Rumi
it struck me as being really arty.
[05:03] Yoyo

[05:07] Rumi
Yeah.
[05:07] Rumi

[05:09] Yoyo

[05:10] Rumi
So it felt like a lot of responsibility.
[05:11] Yoyo

[05:13] Rumi

[05:14] Rumi

[05:19] Rumi

[05:19] ---
Yeah, I joined in.
[05:21] Rumi
I'd say that made it interesting.
[05:24] Rumi
I don't often use a lower
register in my vocal work,
[05:27] Rumi
so it was a unique experience for me.
[05:31] Yoyo
It kinda makes you feel like you're being
[05:33] Yoyo
exposed to a woman's true feelings.
[05:34] Rumi
Oh, yeah.
[05:35] Yoyo
I think doing things like that transports
you into Ekoda-chan's world.
[05:41] Yoyo
That was the concept I was trying
to nail down in this episode.
[05:44] Rumi
I see.
[05:46] Rumi
Let's see...
SIGN Things you struggled with in the studio
[05:47] Rumi
The way I had to be hyper
but maintain a low register
[05:51] Rumi
in order to express what goes on in women's
heads, which some might find intimidating...
[05:58] Rumi
That was the hardest part.
[06:00] Yoyo
You did a great job of giving it depth.
[06:03] Rumi
And lately, I haven't actually
done a lot of voice work,
[06:06] Rumi
so it took a moment or two
to get back into the swing of it.
[06:10] Rumi
That, and the speed. It was just so fast.
[06:13] Rumi
It was hard to keep up
with the animation.
[06:15] Yoyo
Especially as you were on your own.
[06:16] Rumi
You said it.
[06:17] Yoyo
Normally, it'd be more of a conversation,
[06:20] Yoyo
and you'd have a bit of back
and forth, taking turns to talk...
[06:23] Rumi
That's right.
SIGN Have you worked together before?
[06:25] Rumi

[06:28] Rumi

[06:29] Yoyo

[06:30] Rumi
And I played his big sister...
[06:32] Yoyo
Right, Enpi-chan, his sister.
[06:34] Rumi
Enpi-chan was the role.
[06:36] Yoyo
That was one of Nagai Go-sensei's...
[06:37] Rumi
Yes.
[06:38] Rumi
She was nude, except for a cape.
[06:39] Yoyo
Right.
[06:40] Yoyo
I'm amazed they let us air that.
[06:42] Yoyo
She was naked the entire time.
[06:44] Rumi
But it's a piece of anime history now.
[06:46] Yoyo
Right.
[06:46] Rumi
That final episode was just mad.
[06:50] Shishido
It's gotten to the point where I basically
have a pet spider just hanging around.
SIGN Shishido-san's profound respect for life (even bugs)
[06:55] Shishido

[06:56] Yoyo

[07:00] Rumi
So I never get all, "Die! Blargh!"
myself. Emotionally, I mean.
[07:05] Rumi
I've voiced quite a few bad eggs, yeah.
SIGN Shishido-san plays a lot of antagonists
[07:06] Yoyo
You get a lot of those kinds of roles.
[07:08] Rumi
I like to see them as...
How should I put it?
[07:11] Rumi
You get characters who
just live in the moment, right?
[07:15] Rumi
Ones that don't think about the future.
But my characters are always scheming.
[07:21] Rumi
Yeah.
[07:22] Yoyo
Problem is, she'll play a baddie,
[07:24] Yoyo
and they'll end up sounding cute!
[07:27] Kataoka
That's true.
[07:29] Yoyo
I think her voice just has
a natural cuteness to it.
[07:31] Yoyo
Personally, I find her really charming.
SIGN Why Shishido-san was offered the role of Ekoda-chan
[07:34] Kataoka
Yeah, I agree.
[07:35] Yoyo
And I thought that was the
kind of voice I was aiming for.
[07:39] Yoyo
That was the main reason.
[07:40] Rumi
It was a bit different from
what I imagined it would be.
SIGN Your thoughts on portraying Ekoda-chan?
[07:44] Rumi
Compared to what I got from
the manga when I read it...
[07:49] Rumi
I'm not sure what it was.
[07:50] Rumi
But when I thought about it,
what the director said was right,
[07:53] Rumi
and I'm not sure if I should be saying this,
but we made her a bit crude, right?
[07:57] Yoyo
It's for adults, after all.
[07:58] Rumi
Right. Yeah, that's true.
[08:00] Rumi
And that was something...
[08:02] Rumi
When I was looking at it initially,
[08:06] Rumi
I thought about putting something
of myself into the role.
[08:10] Rumi
But the material didn't call for it.
[08:11] Rumi
I seriously thought, "Wow,
this woman has a lot of energy!"
[08:14] Rumi
Like, "She's super crazy!"
[08:16] Yoyo
She's up and down a lot.
[08:17] Rumi
Right!
[08:18] Rumi
So I had to think, "Okay, so this part's
like this..." as I was voicing my lines. Yeah.
[08:23] Rumi
It was a lot of work.
[08:24] Yoyo
Had to switch gears a lot.
[08:25] Rumi

[08:42] Kataoka

[08:43] Kataoka
You had 52 cuts in three
minutes of run-time, right?
[08:46] Yoyo
Sounds about right.
[08:47] Kataoka
That's incredible for the run-time.
[08:49] Rumi
Wow...
[08:51] Yoyo
That includes one really long cut, too.
[08:53] Kataoka
Yeah, exactly. I think it was the 44th.
[08:56] Yoyo
I went a little crazy with cuts.
[08:58] Yoyo
I got it into my head that this was the kind
of concept this anime was conceived for.
[09:01] Rumi
Right.
[09:02] Yoyo
So when I put it together, I thought
"I bet this is what they want."
[09:05] Kataoka
You were exactly right, too.
Right on the money.
[09:07] Kataoka
It had a lot of great action in it.
SIGN Differences from the "Rinshi!! Ekoda-chan" source material
[09:09] Yoyo
Well, there's not actually
any action in the manga,
[09:12] Yoyo
so I guess it's unexpected in that sense.
[09:16] Yoyo
But I wanted to incorporate an action scene
[09:19] Yoyo
that fit the tone
of the source material.
[09:21] Yoyo
So I delved into the later chapters of the
manga to find something to work with,
[09:27] Yoyo
and there were strips
where she did body painting.
[09:32] Yoyo
That was my inspiration,
and I built on it from there.
[09:37] Yoyo
I was shocked by the amount
of leeway I was given.
SIGN The kind of finished product you wouldn't usually see on TV
[09:39] Yoyo
I said to myself,
"I'm allowed to zoom in this much?"
[09:41] Rumi
I've never seen anything like it!
[09:44] Kataoka
I don't think anyone has.
[09:44] Rumi
Not on regular TV, anyway!
[09:47] Yoyo
After I submitted the storyboards,
[09:50] Yoyo
I figured some parts were bound to get
rejected, but they okayed everything.
[09:56] Rumi
Wow!
[09:57] Yoyo
I was so glad they understood
what I was going for.
[10:00] Kataoka
And that fight with the
mosquito was so creative.
[10:06] Yoyo
The part with the mosquito
wasn't in the manga originally.
[10:10] Yoyo
The parts with the G roach
and the lizard were...
[10:14] Yoyo
So I took the vibe from
those parts of the story,
[10:17] Yoyo
and cranked up the volume a little, I guess.
[10:19] Yoyo
Just me and my body.
SIGN The audio (sound effects) was handled by the director himself
[10:23] Yoyo
Shishido-san helped out a bit, too.
[10:26] Kataoka
Shishido-san, you chanted
Ekoda-chan 28 times.
SIGN Shishido-san had to chant "Ekoda-chan" 28 times in the episode
[10:31] Kataoka
I don't think anyone...
[10:32] Yoyo
Was it really that many?
[10:33] Kataoka
But it was turned into part
of the background music.
[10:36] Yoyo
Yeah, that's how we ended up using it.
[10:38] Rumi
It made my head swell, to be honest with you.
[10:41] Rumi
Out of all 12 voice actresses,
I got to say "Ekoda-chan" the most!
[10:48] Yoyo
That's some accomplishment.
[10:49] Rumi
I get to hold that over them.
[10:51] Yoyo
For the audio, I wanted something exciting,
[10:53] Yoyo
but I wasn't sure how to get there.
[10:56] Yoyo
And I still wasn't sure after
I'd finished storyboarding.
[11:01] Yoyo
So, while watching the video, I played
around with some different sound effects,
[11:06] Yoyo
and I thought, "This ought to work."
[11:09] Yoyo
And once Shishido-san agreed to it,
I knew I was onto a winner.
[11:14] Kataoka
Yonetani-san, was there a particular reason
[11:17] Kataoka
or idea you had in mind
when you agreed to do this?
SIGN Yonetani
Yoshitomo
SIGN The reason he accepted the directing job
[11:21] Yoyo
It might take three days
to explain that one...
[11:23] Kataoka
We don't have that long,
but if you wanna get into it...
[11:26] Rumi
They can edit it.
[11:27] Yoyo
Well, nowadays with animation,
it takes a bunch of people to make it,
[11:32] Yoyo
with everyone working
on their own little bit,
[11:35] Yoyo
so you have all these people
working on one specific thing...
[11:42] Yoyo
And that, when added
altogether, results in a project.
[11:47] Yoyo
It's now at the point where you have 30 or 40
key artists, and 5 or 6 animation directors,
[11:54] Yoyo
so it's sort of hard to tell what you're
contributing on any given project.
[11:59] Yoyo
I liked the idea of breaking away from
that and doing something different.
[12:03] Yoyo
I mean, I'm kind of old school,
[12:06] Yoyo
and I was doing solo animation
projects when I was a student.
[12:11] Yoyo
And I was thinking how we really need
[12:13] Yoyo
to have something with
that kind of appeal still,
[12:15] Yoyo
so when I got the call, I figured I'd get
the chance to do something like that.
[12:23] Yoyo
I was very glad to take the job.
[12:28] Yoyo
I think, on the most basic level,
I wanted people to just enjoy watching it,
SIGN As the director, what did you want
to get across in the three-minute run-time?
[12:33] Yoyo
and I also didn't want to wreck
the world of Ekoda-chan.
[12:36] Yoyo
So I wanted to move things around, so that
it would keep that unique atmosphere,
[12:41] Yoyo
and still be entertaining,
even with the short run-time.
[12:47] Yoyo
Beyond that, I wanted to create something
that would represent a kind of approach
[12:52] Yoyo
that feels like it's on the verge
of dying out in the industry.
[12:58] Yoyo
That was part of my conception.

[13:57] Yoyo
That's philosophical.
[13:59] Rumi
Oh, no, I was just thinking how

[14:02] Rumi
She seems to have really strong

showing how she lives her life.
[14:31] Yoyo
As a director, that's a bit like having
an unpolished stone with this sort of...

[14:40] Yoyo

That makes sense.
[15:04] Rumi
I think you did end up getting
an all-new Shishido Rumi in this case.
SIGN What does Ekoda-chan mean to you?
SIGN Yonetani
Yoshitomo
[15:10] Yoyo
I like how Ekoda-chan's so proud,
[15:12] Yoyo
and I like how everything about
her tells us something about life.
[15:18] Yoyo
In the manga, there are a few things
she seriously won't budge on.
[15:23] Yoyo
And I like how you can get a grasp
on her... values, I guess you'd call it?
[15:27] Yoyo
I wanted to make sure I kept
Ekoda-chan true to her values.
[15:31] Yoyo
I really like how versatile she is.
[15:33] Yoyo
She can be a total goofball at times,
but really serious at other times,
[15:37] Yoyo
and there are certain times
where she gives it her all.
[15:40] Yoyo
I wasn't sure I'd be able to get
all that across in three minutes,
[15:44] Yoyo
and thought I'd have to leave
aspects of her character out...
[15:46] Yoyo
But I think, in the end, no matter
which angle you look at it from,
[15:52] Yoyo
I wanted to make sure I used those
three minutes to touch on every aspect,
[15:57] Yoyo
so the viewers would see
those elements of her character.
SIGN How you approach short-form animation
[16:01] Yoyo
I've done ads and things like that before,
[16:03] Kataoka
Right.
[16:05] Yoyo
and I guess it's about waging
war on a much smaller scale.
[16:07] Yoyo
Like, if this was baseball, you'd treat
the regular season very differently
[16:12] Yoyo
to how you'd do things if you
made it to the Japan Series.
[16:15] Yoyo
You need to change your
approach to victory and defeat.
[16:17] Yoyo
It becomes a question of, "How much
can you condense into three minutes?"
[16:21] Yoyo
I also wanted to try and do things
I didn't think the other directors would do,
[16:27] Yoyo
but that I had a chance of pulling off.
[16:31] Yoyo
And then, cram it all into three minutes,
while keeping things balanced.
[16:35] Kataoka
In the studio earlier, Shishido-san,
[16:38] Kataoka
you came out with a story when
you heard the words: "24 years old."
[16:42] Rumi
I went on a kind of rant, yeah.
[16:45] Kataoka
So, when you were 24, what were you like?
[16:49] Kataoka
Compared to what we see in the show...
[16:53] Rumi
Well, let me think about that...
SIGN Yonetani
Yoshitomo
SIGN When you were 24, the same age as Ekoda-chan...
[16:55] Rumi
I think, when I was young, I dunno...
[16:59] Rumi
I mean, I have a great life now,
[17:01] Rumi
but back then, I was lonely, I think.
And it was a strong feeling of loneliness.
[17:07] Rumi
Ekoda-chan has a lot of casual relationships
to cover up those feelings, by comparison.
[17:12] Rumi
But since I was doing a lot
of voice acting back then...
[17:20] Rumi
I think, looking back on it now,
it was a precious time.
[17:24] Yoyo
Those times led to these, right?
[17:26] Rumi
Yeah.
[17:28] Yoyo
When I was 24, I was already in animation.
[17:33] Yoyo
And I've been a director
for a surprisingly long time.
[17:35] Yoyo
I mean, not only has it been a long time,
but I started directing at 26.
[17:41] Yoyo
And it feels like I went from
then to now in the blink of an eye.
[17:46] Yoyo
And when I was 24, I knew no fear.
[17:52] Yoyo
That's just how guys are.
[17:53] Kataoka
I think so, too.

real appeal isn't superficial.

SIGN Yonetani Yoshitomo x Shishido Rumi
[18:05] Yoyo
She's multifaceted, and her charm comes
from all of those aspects of her character.
[18:10] Yoyo
So I thought showing her highs and lows
[18:13] Yoyo
would give the viewers a taste of that...
versatility, and of her complex character.
[18:19] Yoyo
Those moments highlight
the depths of her character.
[18:22] Rumi
I think you're right. Like, in certain
ways, she's almost maternal...
[18:28] Rumi
And she has these cute moments, too.
[18:31] Rumi
There are a lot of
different sides to Ekoda-chan.
[18:35] Yoyo
I mean, it's possible to do, but...
SIGN Do you use the kind of layered sound effects you did in this episode a lot?
[18:38] Yoyo
Generally speaking,
I'm usually not allowed to.
[18:42] Yoyo
In the olden days, I could,
but not so much nowadays.
[18:47] Yoyo
When you were working on older comedies,
[18:50] Yoyo
you had a lot of freedom to mess around.
[18:54] Kataoka
True.
[18:55] Yoyo
Like sticking in random
live-action sequences.
[18:57] Yoyo
Though, a certain Pop You-Know-What
series has been bringing some of that back.
[19:02] Yoyo
But it was more common back in the day.
[19:05] Yoyo
I guess you could say things like
that come and go with the times,
[19:09] Yoyo
in terms of acceptance.
[19:11] Yoyo
And I thought I would be able
to get away with it on this project.
[19:16] Yoyo
The note it opens and closes on:
SIGN Was there any particular part of "Rinshi!! Ekoda-chan" Episode 5 you were concerned about?
[19:20] Yoyo
The youkan bun.
[19:22] Yoyo
The line was actually only voiced once, but...
[19:28] Yoyo
With that line, I wanted to make sure
you could hear Ekoda-chan's anticipation.
[19:33] Yoyo
She was really looking forward to it,
and then, she had to give up on it.
[19:37] Yoyo
That was the direction
I gave to get that idea across.
[19:42] Yoyo
It was a good way to
bookend the episode, I think.
[19:45] Yoyo
So I wanted to emphasize it.
[19:49] Yoyo
I always kept the audience in mind,
SIGN Things you kept in mind while working on the "Rinshi!! Ekoda-chan" anime
[19:52] Yoyo
because I imagine there will
be fans of the manga watching,
[19:57] Yoyo
so I wanted to make something
that wouldn't disappoint them.
[20:02] Yoyo
But beyond that, I also wanted something...
[20:04] Yoyo
In the world of anime right now,
there are so many shows getting pumped out.
[20:08] Yoyo
And I imagine it's hard to
choose what to watch,
[20:14] Yoyo
so I wanted to... I don't
want to say, "Make it weird,"
[20:20] Yoyo
but I wanted it to stand out
like a cactus in a field of flowers.
[20:24] Yoyo
That's the kind of appeal I wanted.
[20:27] Yoyo
Like, there'd be a beautiful
flower blooming on that cactus.
[20:31] Yoyo
Something that's beautiful because
it's growing out of a prickly cactus.
[20:34] Yoyo
I thought that if I went
for something like that,
[20:36] Yoyo
among all the various anime projects, it'd
stand out from the crowd and look appealing,
[20:44] Yoyo
so that was what I was
thinking as I worked on it.
[20:46] Rumi
I think Kataoka-san explained it
perfectly to me earlier today.
SIGN Ekoda-chan's charm
[20:51] Rumi
Like, she doesn't let herself
get caught up in things,
[20:56] Rumi
but instead, exercises self-control,
[20:59] Rumi
and roots out her place in all of it.
[21:02] Rumi
And that's how she lives her life.
[21:04] Rumi
I think that's really what
makes her stand out.
[21:09] Rumi
I mean, everyone around her
might just go with the flow,
[21:12] Rumi
but I personally would prefer doing what
she does. So I admire that in her.
[21:18] Yoyo
I honestly think Ekoda-chan might be
a self-insert for the author of the manga.
[21:23] Yoyo
I've thought that from the start.
[21:25] Yoyo
I know she makes claims to the contrary, but...
[21:29] Yoyo
I just get this feeling that...
she's sharing herself with the world.
[21:34] Yoyo
And that's really appealing.
Because it's a hard thing to do.
[21:39] Yoyo
But by doing it, you can tell that
the goal is for you to enjoy the story,
[21:46] Yoyo
and I think that's part of why
Ekoda-chan feels so lively in the manga.
[21:52] Yoyo
There's a certain charm to that.
[21:54] Kataoka
Right.
[21:54] Yoyo
I really love that aspect of it.
[21:58] Yoyo
There are some depressing parts in
the manga that are easy to relate to, too,
[22:03] Yoyo
and those also stick in my memory.
[22:06] Yoyo
I hope we inspire people
to check out the manga.
[22:10] Narrator
And that brings today's
discussion to a close.
