[06:54] Tomo

[06:59] Tomo

But for Ekoda-chan, as the voice track

[07:33] Tomo
I wasn't exactly sure how
it would affect her character.
[07:39] Tomo
Maybe not so much that
I didn't know but more like,
[07:42] Tomo
there were a lot of different
ways it could've gone.
[07:45] Tomo
I didn't have any particular preference
for how I wanted the role to be performed.
[07:53] Tomo
And in general, I don't
tend to go into recordings
[07:56] Tomo
with a lot of preconceived notions
on how I think something should sound.
[07:59] Tomo
I figured Chiba-san could
just do her own thing.
[08:01] Tomo
Sorry if that sounds dismissive,
[08:03] Tomo
but I'm saying it was your choice because
you played the lead this time.
[08:07] Tomo
And I thought you'd come up
with something that'd make me go:
[08:11] Tomo
"I get it now! That's how it can work!"
[08:14] Tomo
And as long as the result was satisfying,
[08:16] Tomo
that was the main thing.
[08:17] Chiba
And was it?
[08:18] Tomo
Yes, it was.
[08:18] Chiba
Oh, phew.
[08:20] Chiba
Going in, I kept thinking, "What should I do?"
and I didn't know how to approach voicing her,
SIGN What directions
did Director Mochizuki give you?
[08:28] Chiba
even after looking through the script,
[08:33] Chiba
because she doesn't really do flirty,
[08:35] Chiba
and she doesn't put on a cutesy voice
when she's around him, either.
[08:40] Chiba
And I understood all of this,
but it made it really challenging for me,
[08:46] Chiba
so I was panicking a bit going into it!
[08:50] Chiba
But when I got here, just before we started,
[08:55] Chiba
I said, "I'm not sure what to do.
This is really hard."
[08:59] Chiba
So he gave me a broad outline,
[09:03] Chiba
reiterating the things I'd also
got from reading the manga...
[09:07] Chiba
But after that, regarding
the performance itself?
[09:13] Chiba
It went along the lines of: "Don't be tense.
Just go with whatever's natural."
[09:18] Chiba
And I was like, "Okay, then."
[09:20] Tomo
For this show, there wasn't, uh,
what you'd call an audition process.
[09:27] Tomo
So I left her in your hands.
[09:30] Tomo
And if anything sounded weird,
then it'd just be your fault.
[09:38] Chiba
I'm sorry!
[09:38] Tomo
That was how I felt going into it, anyway.
[09:42] Tomo
But I picked you for the role because
I didn't think there'd be any problems. Yeah.
[09:47] Tomo
There were gradations used for her skin.
SIGN Coloring techniques
[09:52] Tomo
That was something fresh.
[09:55] Tomo
With animation, you normally draw a line
where the color changes to indicate shading,
[09:59] Tomo
but this time, we made the edges
slightly lighter, using a gradation.
[10:03] Chiba
And that was special.
[10:05] Tomo
We only did it for skin tones.
[10:05] Tomo
For this time.
[10:07] Tomo
The coloring for everything
else was done a bit more flatly.
[10:10] Tomo
But by doing that with the skin,
[10:12] Tomo
it gave it more of a physical,
maybe even visceral, presence.
[10:15] Tomo
I didn't want it to look too flat, because
it'd look too comical for the material.
[10:19] Chiba
I see. Having to consider
all of that stuff must be tough.
[10:23] Tomo
It's actually something that,
because of how short the run-time is...
[10:27] Chiba
It made it possible?
[10:28] Tomo
Right. The short run-time allowed us to
try something unique with the coloring.
[10:34] Tomo
Something like that would be too much
work on a full-length TV series.
[10:37] Tomo
We also used lots of instruments
to make the sound effects.
SIGN Things you can do with the shorter format
[10:40] Tomo
Since it was so short, that was
something we could play with.
[10:43] Chiba
I can see how making all those noises would
become a chore for a 30-minute show.
[10:47] Tomo
Exactly.
[10:49] Tomo
That's why traditional sound effects
tend to get used most of the time.
[10:53] Tomo
But since this was short, I thought we could
try something a little out of the ordinary.
[10:59] Chiba
When I saw the art in motion...
When I saw that...
SIGN Touches used in portraying Ekoda-chan
[11:04] Chiba
I noticed she doesn't really move
a whole lot, but it's sort of...
[11:07] Chiba
I wouldn't call it expressive,
in spite of how conservative it is,
[11:12] Chiba
but it was really striking how
the art carried you through the story.
[11:17] Chiba
I wanted to make sure
I didn't go overboard. Like...
[11:22] Chiba
I thought, if I really went for it,
there'd be a disconnect,
[11:27] Chiba
so I tried to rein it in a bit.
[11:30] Chiba
I mean, it wasn't a hard and fast rule,
but I was trying to sorta be restrained.
[11:35] Chiba
Because I think that's
the kind of girl she is,
[11:40] Chiba
and the art gave that impression, too.
[11:42] Kataoka
Right.
[11:44] Chiba
So I didn't want to be too over-the-top.
[11:48] Chiba
And that's actually harder to do,
since just shouting things is pretty easy.
[11:53] Chiba
And today, there was that promo
we did... That was seriously tough.
[11:59] Chiba
I probably shouldn't say that!
[12:01] Kataoka
It's fine.
[12:02] Chiba
It was quite a challenge.
[12:04] Chiba
Compared to just going,
"Ah! It's on sale now!" and cutting loose,
[12:08] Chiba
or in this case, "Go watch
it now!" in a loud voice,
[12:11] Chiba
it was more like, "You can watch it now."
[12:16] Chiba
I can use that momentum and go all out,
[12:19] Chiba
but Ekoda-chan isn't like that at all.
[12:23] Chiba
She's so very, very restrained but
she still needs to be all, "You can watch it."
[12:30] Chiba
So, compared to most
of the characters I've done,
[12:35] Chiba
she was a real challenge.
For me, anyway.
[12:38] Tomo
But when we went in
and recorded that promo,
[12:43] Tomo
it ended up being pretty different
from how you sounded in the episode.

When I first got the offer to

[14:45] Tomo
If you were playing her sister,
how would you make her sound?
[14:51] Chiba
Big Sis, huh? Big Sis...
[14:55] Chiba
But, y'know, it would really depend...
on how Ekoda-chan sounds.
SIGN A performance can change depending on

SIGN Mochizuki
Tomomi
[15:01] Chiba
Like, depending on what Maa-kun
does first can really set the tone,

[15:09] Chiba
Sort of like, "How's he going to be?
How's he going to be? He's such a natural..."
[15:14] Chiba
So I think, if I was playing her sister,
the delivery would change a lot...
[15:23] Chiba
based on how the person
playing Ekoda-chan did their take.
[15:31] Tomo
I see.
SIGN Do you want to draw her sister?
[15:33] Tomo

[16:55] Chiba
To me, not actually saying these things,
and just thinking them in a detached way...
[17:02] Chiba
That's really impressive.
[17:04] Kataoka
You see how often she gets back home
[17:05] Kataoka
and just bangs on the wall in frustration.
[17:06] Chiba
Right, right.
[17:07] Kataoka
You don't have anything like that?
You tend to just bang on them in the moment?
[17:10] Chiba
Well, I don't always give them
a piece of my mind in every instance,
[17:13] Chiba
because I'm an adult, but...
[17:15] Tomo
Putting aside whether or not you
actually express it in the moment,
[17:19] Tomo
the way she thinks about men who are
being stupid, and her opinions of them,
[17:23] Tomo
I think that's something that's
pretty universal in women.
[17:31] Tomo
What do you think?
SIGN Chiba-san's thoughts when she sees guys being stupid
[17:32] Chiba
I dunno, I wonder about that, because
that sort of feeling towards men...
SIGN Mochizuki
Tomomi
[17:38] Chiba
Y'know, when you're just
like, "Ugh," about them?
[17:40] Chiba
I don't think it's all that
different from how you feel
[17:44] Chiba
when you see women
that you think are stupid.
[17:48] Chiba
I'm not too sure that gender
plays much of a role in it.
[17:56] Chiba
Because when I think,
"Ugh," it applies universally.
[18:00] Chiba
And I won't bite my tongue when it happens.
[18:02] Chiba
And the way that she does,
and keeps everything internal...
[18:09] Chiba
It's really mature.
[18:11] Chiba
It's impressive. I mean, she's 24.
[18:13] Chiba
I think that's seriously impressive.
[18:14] Kataoka
Yeah, she's only 24.
[18:16] Chiba
I mean, when I was 24,
I was still a total dummy.
[18:22] Tomo
I actually think, and
I've never met the author,
[18:27] Tomo
but you get the impression Ekoda-chan's
creator is quite impressive herself.
SIGN Being impressed with Takinami Yukari, as a reader
[18:33] Tomo
As a reader, it's a manga I learned a lot from.
[18:39] Tomo
There's this phrase, and I don't know
if it was used as a slogan or something,
[18:44] Tomo
but I remember it being called:
"A bible for women; a guide for men."
[18:48] Tomo
But I took a lot away from it.
[18:50] Tomo
It scared me quite a bit, too.
[18:53] Tomo
Gave me lots to be wary about.
SIGN Thoughts on today
[18:56] Tomo
It wasn't a lot of material, in terms
of run-time. It was really short...
[19:00] Chiba
Right.
[19:01] Chiba
I think that might've been a factor
[19:02] Tomo
Oh, definitely.
[19:02] Chiba
in how difficult it was.
[19:03] Tomo
I... I was actually about to say that...
[19:05] Chiba
Oh, sorry, I stepped on your toes!
[19:08] Tomo
It's fine. And the thing is,
I think it was worth taking on,
[19:11] Tomo
and I hope people get something out of it.
[19:15] Tomo
I mean, I've been making anime
for 30-something years now...
[19:19] Tomo
And what I realized working on this is,
[19:23] Tomo
sure, you're only doing enough art
to fill three minutes of airtime,
[19:27] Tomo
which, compared to a 30-minute
anime, is a lot less work,
[19:32] Tomo
and in one sense,
that makes it easier, but...
[19:34] Tomo
Making a quality product with
a run-time of only three minutes,
[19:40] Tomo
and one you're satisfied with,
is by no means, an easy feat.
[19:43] Tomo
If anything, because it's over so fast,
[19:48] Tomo
it's kind of hard to make sure
everything falls into place.
[19:51] Tomo
Although, today, after we'd finished
recording, I was rather relieved.
[19:57] Tomo
Even though I've been doing
this job for as long as I have,
[20:01] Tomo
I find there still aren't many
times when I feel I can relax,
[20:04] Tomo
because I've gotten used to the stress.
[20:06] Tomo
It was a rare feeling to have.
[20:09] Tomo
Like, say you have a variety of options,
[20:11] Tomo
having to choose the
right one is somewhat...
[20:15] Tomo
Compared to having a full-length story,
it's much harder to make a decision,
[20:23] Tomo
or even figure out what it is
you want to base your decisions on.
[20:32] Chiba
First, I saw the storyboards.
Then, I saw the completed script.
[20:36] Chiba
But even after all that,
I had my head in my hands,
[20:40] Chiba
worrying how I was going to approach it,
[20:42] Chiba
and that was the mood I was in when
I actually showed up to the recording.
[20:48] Chiba
I honestly thought I might
not be able to handle it.
[20:51] Chiba
It's been a long time since I felt like that.
Thinking, "Oh, I don't know if I can do this!"
[20:56] Chiba
But since I was given so much freedom,
and seeing Maa-kun's performance...
[21:04] Chiba
Not to mention, seeing the animation in
motion gives a different kind of feedback.
[21:09] Tomo
Yeah, I suppose it does.
[21:10] Chiba
Compared to the storyboards.
[21:12] Chiba
So being able to see how
everything was moving,
[21:17] Chiba
and how things were likely to
look in the finished product,
[21:23] Chiba
that really helped me get closer to the
finish line with my version of Ekoda-chan,
[21:32] Chiba
so I think my take was one that
was built upon all of those things.
[21:42] Chiba
And it was a good take, right?
[21:45] Tomo
Right. You pass.
[21:46] Chiba
Oh, thank you.
[21:47] Chiba
That made it sound like
I was forcing you to agree!
[21:50] Chiba
But, y'know, getting
that approval in the end...
[21:53] Chiba
I'll sleep like a rock tonight.
[21:56] Kataoka
You were still nervous about it?
[21:58] Chiba
I was! The whole time!
[22:01] Chiba
I was like "Argh! What do I do?!"
[22:03] Kataoka
Really?
[22:03] Chiba
Yeah, seriously!
[22:06] Chiba
It's been a long time since I felt like that.
[22:10] Narrator
And that brings today's
discussion to a close.
