I was really hoping I could
pull off a natural-sounding take

to complement the sort of "day
in the life" scene that was depicted.

Well, to me, Ekoda-chan is kind of
a symbol of the sort of common...

with your version of Ekoda-chan?

I guess you'd call them "desires"?
Or maybe "laziness" is more apt?

But, underneath it all, she's
got that spark of earnestness.

It's actually pretty hard
to get through life

without that little bit
of conviction, you know?

It was all of those things combined that
I felt when I was reading the original manga,

and I really took a shine to that little bit
of earnestness she has deep down inside her.

Well, I came to the original
via the collected volumes,

and I remember thinking,
"This character seems really plausible."

I think, a lot of the time,
men tend to imagine that women...

When they try to picture what their

I think a lot of men have this vision of us
all having really glamorous home lives,

but I think, in reality, and
especially considering she's 24,

the picture it paints
of bachelorette life

makes me go, "Yeah, that sounds about right."

And that made it really easy
for me to relate to, personally.

reading the script and seeing the footage,

And I thought, since that's a bigger motion,

it'd be more of a visual treat for the viewer.

But one of the women doing the animation

turned around and said:
"No one would ever do this."

"No matter how unladylike she is,
no woman would do this."

"This is how women take their clothes off."

And I was like, "Okay, I just thought
it'd be more interesting my way."

being able to show the
way women act in private,

which is something I'm not familiar with?

That's what we were able to do with this.

So, as a creator, even if I thought
the other way was visually appealing,

if I hear the words, "No woman would
ever do this," I have to go, "Oh, right."

And whenever you have
a collaborative process,

that kind of back-and-forth is a lot of fun.

I got the impression that she was really cute.

At first, as I was reading, I thought about
giving the monologue more of a pop feel,

That gave me the impression that Ekoda-chan
was totally absorbed in the moment.

Like she was treating it as a documentary
of her own life, produced by her.

So I tried to lean towards making it
more interesting in that way, instead.

Well, with Nakajima Miyuki-san's music...

and depict the way she moves
as naturally as possible.

I wanted to show that side of her,
without making it too jokey.

And if I'm honest about why I did that...

The other 12... well, 11 directors?

They're all really good.
Every single one of them.

They're all... masters of comedy.

On top of being good at
making anime shows in general.

And she not only delivered that,

without losing sight of the goal,

So, in that sense, there was a lot
of empathy and accommodation.

fewer prejudices. That's what I think.

So when they come home beat after work...

It's usually after work, anyway.

At times like that, you kinda
get lost in your own world,

and there's that moment where you
think: "What am I gonna do to relax?"

So out comes the beer, or the malt liquor.

And I bet they come to the realization that,

"All those old dudes out there, busting
their humps, are doing the same, huh?"

And even though they say, mockingly,
"They're doing the same damned thing!"

somewhere underneath that derisive tone,

there's a sort of... affection.
A sense of camaraderie. Right?

Shared by people who go out into the world,
work at their job, then come home again.

And that's their daily routine.

That was something I asked the audio
director to help me get across.

It keeps coming back
to this perception I have

of there being no real difference
between Ekoda-chan and myself.

And I wanted that to come across,
both in the visuals and the audio.

And if we manage that, it'll be great.

At the beginning of the episode, the weird
things she says about her neighborhood...
***SIGN*** Things the sound director helped her figure out

And what she says isn't really
meant in a negative way,

so I was asked to make the lines
sound somewhat affectionate.
**[15:06] Mimori**
And that made me realize,
Ekoda-chan is kind of...

She's not exactly cynical, but she's very...
down-to-earth, especially in how
**[15:17] Mimori**
she analyzes her current situation
and tries to find a path to happiness.

And I thought that made Ekoda-chan
really appealing and likable as a person.

Instead of just being, like, "I'm not fond of
this neighborhood, but I have to live here."

Ekoda-chan kinda views Ekoda
as this weird halfway house.

Where she's not near the center of the city,
but she's not out in the country, either.

But somehow, she's comfortable there.

That sorta gets across her true feelings.

And I felt that was an important
element of the episode.

back everything she just said,

but she reminds us that she's only 24.

And she's still sorta glamorous,
even if she does have her own troubles.

her that I really loved.

it made me think about how
I ended up as a voice actress.

I could sort of see parallels there.

I started out in theater, and really
had no idea about anime at first,

but I started getting into it
when I became a voice actress.

And meeting someone else like
